Why Create a Garden Path?

Garden path paving brings more than just functionality; it adds character and visual flow to your outdoor space. A thoughtfully designed pathway can create more opportunities for enjoyment within your garden all year round, safely guiding visitors through your garden’s most beautiful areas. Whether leading to a cosy patio area or a lush flower bed, a paved path offers direction and style whilst protecting delicate plants and keeping your shoes clean!

Through our selection of materials and designs, you can create everything you desire, from rustic-feel stepping stone pathways to smooth, modern designs. Every one of our paving options is crafted with quality and resilience in mind, ensuring your garden can withstand the elements of the British weather.

Tips for Choosing the Right Garden Path

To ensure you make the most of your garden path plans, consider the following:

  • Path Width: Narrow pathways, such as stepping stones, are ideal for directing people in smaller gardens, while wider paths work well in larger spaces.
  • Path Shape: Consider using curves to complement your space and add visual interest, or choose straight lines for a more formal, structured design.
  • Texture and Colour: Select materials that complement your home’s exterior and the garden’s style; for example, earthy tones blend well with the existing landscape.
  • Maintenance Needs: Some materials, like limestone, may require occasional sealing, while others, such as porcelain, are low-maintenance and easy to clean.

To ensure stability and durability, place a sub-base layer of compacted MOT Type 1 or similar crushed stone beneath your paving slabs. On top of the sub-base, add a bedding layer of sharp sand or a mortar mix to create an even surface. This foundation helps prevent movement, supports proper drainage, and prolongs the life of your paved area.

Start by marking out the path and digging to a depth of about 150mm (as well as the depth of the slab). Add a sub-base layer of compacted MOT Type 1 or similar material, followed by a bedding layer of mortar or sharp sand. Lay the slabs, ensuring they are level and have a slight slope for drainage. Finally, fill the gaps between the slabs with jointing compound or sand, and clean off any excess.

Most garden paths require minimal maintenance. Regular sweeping and occasional washing help keep the path looking fresh while sealing can protect certain materials from wear. Additionally, if your garden path is placed through a grass area, regularly trimming the grass edge around the paving can prevent overgrown grass from becoming a hazard. If you notice any issues with the pathway material, address this promptly to reduce the risk of slips and trips.

A width of around 80cm inches allows comfortable passage, though wider paths may be better suited for those with accessibility issues, larger gardens, or high-traffic areas.

Absolutely! Mixing materials like natural stone and slate or adding decorative edging can enhance visual interest and make your garden path uniquely yours. Please contact us if you’d like to discuss any design ideas, and our experts will be more than happy to assist you!
