Indoor Water Feature Ideas for Your Home

December 19, 2016Hayley Frances-MullinsNews, Inspiration

Indoor water feature ideas are everywhere. Fountains and other features are a wonderful addition to any home. Not only do they bring about a sense of serenity and tranquillity, but they also make a beautiful and attractive centrepiece. In the winter months, they’re especially appropriate, allowing you to enjoy your beautiful water feature without having to leave the warmth and comfort of the house.

Water features come in three main varieties: wall, floor, and tabletop fountains. Place them in choice locations around your home to create a soothing ambience and encourage relaxation.

Designs and materials

Indoor water features are available in a great variety of materials, with fountains available in materials such as copper, marble, granite, stone, glass and marble. This choice of material means that you can find the perfect water feature for your style of home, whether this is modern and contemporary, traditional or ornate.

You can also choose from a wide range of designs, with different shapes and sizes to complement any style of home, no matter how big or small. These designs all fall broadly into three main design types: wall fountains, floor fountains and tabletop fountains.

1. Wall water fountains

Wall fountains add a touch of elegance to any room and remain one of the most popular indoor water features available. More like an artistic wall hanging, they are an impressive focal point. Great if you are short on floor space, wall fountains are easily mounted on the wall by a bracketed support system. They use a quiet submersible pump, are powered by an electrical plug and will often have their own lighting.

Available in a range of sizes, with options in slate, marble, stone or mirrored glass, they really are a beautiful addition to your home.

2. Floor water fountains

Regal and elegant, floor water fountains make a dramatic but beautiful statement. A freestanding water feature, these fountains are placed on the floor and range in height from 3 feet to an impressive 10 feet tall and are available in natural stone, slate, copper, glass, mirror and acrylic finishes.

Electrically operated with a quiet submersible pump, they have their own lighting – which is stunning. They are also versatile, looking equally wonderful in the corner of a room, along a wall or in a hallway.

3. Tabletop water fountains

The smallest of the water features designed for the home, tabletop fountains are perfect if you lack the wall or floor space but would still like to add some serenity and tranquillity to your home. Freestanding, these wall features can be included on a table, a kitchen counter or even a desktop, and they look fantastic in a range of rooms from the bedroom to the kitchen to your home office.

They are also available in a wide range of materials, designs and shapes.  Like other fountain water features, they are operated by a quiet submersible pump and are electrically operated.

Due to their size, tabletop fountains do not typically come with lighting effects and have a quieter running water sound than other fountains. They can however, be easily moved from one room to another, making them not only beautiful but also incredibly versatile.

The benefits of an indoor water feature in the home

Whatever design you decide upon, there are many benefits to incorporating a water feature into the home.

  • Not only can a water feature be visually beneficial, adding a beautiful, stunning focal point to any room, but it can aid relaxation creating an atmosphere of serenity and calm.
  • A water feature also acts as a humidifier. It adds moisture to the air and improves indoor air quality, which in particular can help alleviate many dry skin conditions.
  • Finally, the white noise produced by the flowing water can also help drown out undesirable noise such as traffic or loud neighbours, giving you not only more peace but also helping you to enjoy a better night’s sleep.

Consider how the fountain matches with the rest of your room and adjust as necessary to bring out the best of both. Our Paving ranges can work just as well in an interior setting.  Match a rustic indoor fountain with traditional flagstone. Contemporary styles and stones will better complement a modern fountain design. Whichever your preference, link your fountain with the rest of your room for a seamless, stylised appearance.
