Two Easy DIY Garden Fountains

January 27, 2014Hayley Frances-MullinsHow To, NewsNo comments

One of the most gratifying DIY patio or backyard projects is the creation of fountain with running water. The gentle sound of trickling water together with the relaxing activity of small birds around the water brings life to your garden environment.

There are many types of water fountains, ranging from large metal tub fountains that can be filled with a watering can, to more vibrant fountains with running water. Presently, Asian-inspired bamboo fountains are in vogue and considered extremely elegant in gardens across the UK.

Easy Instructions For A Simple Fountain

  • 1. Begin by filling any and all drainage holes in the ceramic pot. Use a silicone sealant to create a watertight basin for a basic patio fountain. Popular pot sizes are 25 inches high and have a diameter of 15 inches.
  • 2. Place the ceramic pot on the patio and attach the fountain pump to the bottom. Attach pump tubing to the hose nozzle and extend the cord over the back of the of the pot.
  • 3. Use river stones to obscure the view of the pump. Be careful that the pump tube is not blocked or hindered by the stones.
  • 4. Cut the fountain tube so that is 2 inches shorter than the height of the pot. If necessary, secure the posture of the tube by wrapping a wire around the pot.
  • 5. Attach the nozzle securely to the tube.
  • 6. Fill the ceramic pot with water.
  • 7. Plug the pump into an electrical outlet and turn the pump on. Presto, you have running water.
  • 8. Decorate to taste.

For Shady Areas in the Garden

This simple do-it-yourself fountain is very effective and can be extremely enjoyable in shady areas of the garden;

  • 1. Dig a hole and line the hole with a thick plastic liner.
  • 2. Purchase a rock with a pre-drilled hole for a water line. Use 2 cinder blocks to hold up the rock.
  • 3. Hide the pump in the back in a low visibility setting. Use foliage to further conceal.
  • 4. Run a clear plastic tube from the pump to the top.
  • 5. Attach the pump to a timer.
  • 6. Use flat rocks to line the inside and outside of the lined hole.
  • 7. Cover the electrical line with mulch.
  • 8. Attach the line to an electrical outlet and let the timer turn on.
  • 9. Surround the fountain with mulch, hosta and astilbe.

Pull up a chair, get a good book and enjoy. A garden fountain can provide you with amazing relaxation, and give your garden’s wildlife something extra. For more information about the other garden products that we supply at Minster Paving, get in touch today.
